If flight schedules allow, we will fly direct from London to Santiago, Chile.

On arrival in Santiago, we transfer to our centrally-located hotel, where we have the afternoon to spend at leisure.

Early this morning, we transfer back to Santiago Airport for a flight south to Punta Arenas, with an onward connection to Mount Pleasant in the Falkland Islands.

On arrival, we transfer by road for approximately one hour to the town of Stanley, with the remainder of the afternoon free to explore the capital.

From Stanley, we board a short flight to the remote and wildlife-rich Bleaker Island, a haven for some of the Falklands’ most captivating species. Here, you’ll encounter a thriving colony of imperial shags, as well as rockhopper, Gentoo, and Magellanic penguins, alongside impressive southern sea lions. With two full days to explore at a relaxed pace, you’ll have ample opportunity to capture these remarkable animals in the soft, atmospheric morning and evening light.

Accommodation: Bleaker Island Settlement – 3 nights

Next, we take a short flight to Sea Lion Island, a true wildlife paradise. Here, we are likely to encounter our first southern elephant seals, alongside bustling colonies of Magellanic, Gentoo, and rockhopper penguins, as well as southern sea lions. The island is also home to some of the Falklands’ distinctive passerines, including the endemic Cobb’s wren, tussac bird, dark-faced ground tyrant, and white-bridled finch.

In November, southern elephant seal pups make their first tentative ventures into the sea, often using small tidal pools along the shore. These vulnerable moments are sometimes exploited by orca, offering rare and dramatic natural interactions. Meanwhile, enormous bull elephant seals—measuring over 4.5 metres and weighing nearly four tonnes—remain dominant on the beaches, defending their harems from rivals. Any clashes between bulls can produce truly spectacular photographic opportunities.

After a short flight northwest across the archipelago, we arrive at Carcass Island for a three-night stay.

Here, in addition to familiar Magellanic and Gentoo penguins and southern elephant seals, the island’s interior offers opportunities to spot more elusive species such as short-eared owl, long-tailed meadowlark, and black-throated finch.

The surrounding waters are also a haven for Commerson’s and Peale’s dolphins, and with a bit of luck, we may encounter these charismatic marine mammals during our journey to the island.

Accommodation: Carcass Island Homestay – 3 nights

Next, we fly east to Saunders Island, where we focus much of our time at the renowned area known as The Neck. Here, we are likely to encounter our first king penguins of the trip, alongside Gentoo, Magellanic, rockhopper, and the occasional macaroni penguin.

The rookery is home to an impressive black-browed albatross colony of around 12,000 pairs, as well as imperial shagsand the striking striated caracara.

Along the shoreline, we can expect to see the quirky snowy sheathbill, a pigeon-like scavenger, alongside dolphin gulls, Falklands and blackish oystercatchers, the endemic Falklands steamer duck, and the elegant white-rumped sandpiper—offering a rich diversity of photographic subjects in a single location.

Accommodation: Saunders Island Cottages – 2 nights

Today we must leave Saunders Island and return to Stanley, where we have the remainder of the day to spend at leisure. There is plenty to see and do, and even to photograph in Stanley, or you can simply relax at the hotel.

Today we depart Stanley early in the morning for a scenic three-hour drive to Volunteer Point, home to a large king penguin colony of approximately 1,200 birds. The colony is centred around Volunteer Beach, where we will spend the day capturing these iconic birds as they come ashore and venture out to sea. The expansive sandy beach provides an ideal setting for creating striking and memorable images.

In addition to king penguins, there are opportunities to photograph Magellanic and Gentoo penguins, adding variety to your portfolio. As our final full day in the Falklands, this is the perfect moment to refine your techniques, explore new perspectives, and make the most of these magnificent birds in their natural habitat.

After breakfast, we transfer to Mount Pleasant airport for our flight to Santiago, via Punta Arenas.

On arrival in Santiago, we collect our bags and walk the short distance to the hotel, which is located just outside the airport entrance
