The Highlands In Winter

Among the rugged peaks and windswept plateaus of the Scottish Highlands lives one of Britain’s most iconic and resilient mammals the mountain hare. Perfectly adapted to survive within these harsh winter landscapes, they thrive amongst snow-covered heather, rock, and ever-changing Highland weather.

For more than a decade, award-winning wildlife photographer Kevin Morgans has worked extensively with mountain hares, developing an intimate understanding of their behaviour, habitat, and the challenges involved in photographing them ethically in the wild. His atmospheric images have received multiple international awards, becoming recognised for their storytelling, emotion, and connection to the landscape.

This experience combines wildlife photography, fieldcraft, and creative storytelling within the winter landscapes of the Highlands. Through personal guidance in the field, participants will learn fieldcraft, composition, behaviour, and how to work creatively with winter light and conditions to create more powerful and meaningful wildlife imagery.

This is an opportunity to slow down, connect with the landscape, and experience one of Britain’s last truly wild winter environments.

SCOTLANDS WILD HEART

Wild Conditions. Real Moments.

Winter in the Highlands is unpredictable and that’s precisely what makes it so rewarding.

Snowstorms can sweep across the plateau without warning. Light changes constantly. Conditions shift by the hour. These fleeting moments are what create truly atmospheric wildlife photographs.

Throughout the experience, Kevin will guide you through not only camera technique, but also the thought process behind creating stronger wildlife imagery from anticipating behaviour to working creatively with weather, scale, and storytelling.

Every session is shaped by conditions, wildlife activity, and the opportunities the landscape presents on the day.

THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS IN WINTER ARE MORE THAN A DESTINATION THEY’RE A PLACE TO SLOW DOWN, CONNECT WITH THE WILD, AND CREATE IMAGES THAT TELL A DEEPER STORY.

  • “My husband and I spent a fantastic 2 days in the Cairngorms with Kev photographing the mountain hare. His knowledge of both the environment and the hares was second to none, and his expert fieldcraft enabled us to capture some lovely images. Kev is a very selfless photographer, making sure we always had the best photography opportunities. If I was to go again, I would book Kev every time, he is great fun, good company, and extremely knowledgeable, huge thank you Kev”

Jo Penson - Mountain Hare Workshop

  • “Kevin was a patient and inspiring guide. His passion for wildlife photography and his knowledge was inspiring. He offered fantastic advice and no question was daft. It was an amazing experience seeing and photographing the mountain hares and I highly recommend booking a workshop with Kevin. Thank you again Kevin!”

Mandy Williams - Mountain Hare Workshop

  • “I recently returned from a two-day mountain hare workshop with Kev. I really had to write this not only to thank Kev for a wonderful couple of days! But to also commend Kev on his superb guidance which without question made it a truly memorable and ENJOYABLE two days, his relaxed, fun, attentive way was superb! as was his knowledge of the hares and their surrounding environment, always on hand to help my photography and advice if needed/wanted! Needless to say, I shall be booking future days with Kev.! Thanks again Kev for a wonderful, enjoyable two-day experience.”

Richard Jones - Mountain Hare Workshop

  • “I recently returned from 2 days photographing the mountain hares with Kevin, although the weather was challenging with his knowledge and fieldcraft Kevin was able to ensure I came away with photographs and an unforgettable experience. Kevin was there throughout to give help and advice when needed and always put safety first when out on the hills retreating to the lower slopes when the weather conditions deteriorated. Thanks again Kevin for a wonderful, enjoyable two-day experience”

Ian Anderson - Mountain Hare Workshop

  • “I have tried…and failed for three successive winters to see and photograph mountain hares in snow. This year I succeeded thanks to Kevin who went the extra mile in order to make it happen. I booked with Kevin for a day in February. However, on that day, we were forced to turn back due to snow blizzards and near white-out conditions. Not to be defeated we tried again the next day but the roads were impassable. So, at very short notice, Kevin arranged for us to photograph crested tits (a bonus). On the third day of trying for the hares, thanks to Kevin, I finally achieved my ambition of photographing mountain hares in the snow. Kevin is friendly, kind and went over and above his remit to support me in this. I wholeheartedly recommend him as a guide. Thank you, Kevin. M xx”

Miriam Dee - Mountain Hare Workshop

  • “Kev is a real specialist when it became to the hare and their environment. He taught us how to approach the hare without disturbing them. I got some amazing shots thanks to him. He is a great guide, one in a million, he really makes sure you have the best opportunities to photograph the hares even when we had some amazing light one day, he made sure we got the best places. He answers all your questions, it’s never too much. I would not miss the trip for the world and can recommend Kevin as a guide to everyone. Thanks, Kevin, so glad I was part of it! ”

Bianca Blonk - Simply Hares Tour

  • “I had the great fortune to spend two days with Kevin in the Cairngorms. It was so good to spend time with Kevin. His enthusiasm for his subject came over in spades. He was every bit as excited at seeing the hares as I was and really worked with me to help ensure I got great shots. He got me to the right places to see what I wanted. He then worked with me on my fieldcraft to get close to both the hares. And then when we were in place helped me ensure I got the right shots. He built on my existing skills and knowledge as needed for the subject matter and conditions. It just went so well. Kevin is one of a very small group of seriously talented and passionate young UK wildlife photographers. He is a credit to his profession and absolutely an ambassador for all that is good about photography and photographers. I would absolutely recommend spending time working with him and making the most of his expertise if you get the opportunity. I certainly intend to again.”

John McCowan - Mountain Hare Workshop

  • “Approaching a new subject is always difficult but I knew to put my faith in Kev was the only way forward when it came to Mountain Hares. Kev’s passion, knowledge and fieldcraft skills meant that we have the most inspiring day. It really was exactly what I had hoped for. Kev’s patience, approachability and enthusiasm made it such an easy and awesome day to top off a fantastic weekend in the Cairngorms.”

Scott Latham - Mountain Hare Workshop

  • “I had a fantastic week with Kevin in Scotland to photograph the hares. Kevin is very knowledgeable about the hares, he knows how to find them, approach them and find the best standpoint to photograph them. Kevin is also a very nice company during the day and we had a lot of fun. We spent 4 days in the mountains which were good, because of the different weather types”

Karin Lokers - Simply Hares Tour

  • “I had a great couple of days with Kev. I initially booked a 1-day Mountain Hare workshop but due to the ridiculously wet and windy weather, it turned into 3 days. Kev was super accommodating, trying to get us out to the hill each day and switching plans so we’d have a good chance of finding the Hares. When we managed to get out onto the hill it didn’t take long for Kev to find a Hare and get us in a fantastic position for photography. His knowledge, experience, and great guiding helped me walk away with the shots of Mountain Hares in the snow that I’d wanted”

Josh Copping - Mountain Hare Workshop

  • “Looking for and finding hares with Kevin on the windy mountains of the Highlands was quite an experience. His trained eye managed to find the hares despite their perfect camouflage and because of apparent familiarity with his actions as a photographer, they let us approach at an appropriate distance. Kevin as an expert on their behavior as well as photo techniques guided the three of us in a really excellent way. His love for nature and for the animals impressed deeply. Strongly Recommended ”

    Paula - Simply Hares Tour

  • “Just like to say a huge thanks to Kev for showing my the ropes up in the Cairngorms photographing Mountain Hare this winter. Not only did he allow me to take some awesome photos, but he also offered to carry up my huge 500mm lens! (I wish I’d taken a photo as he had mine on his front and his on his back). What a dude. Look forward to catching up with you soon for some time in Scotland.”

Alex Gill - Mountain Hare Workshop

  • “I spent two days with Kevin photographing the Mountain Hares and what a fantastic time it was. Everything was so well organized with lots of great advice prior to the trip. The track to get to the hares is pretty tough going, especially when you’re carrying heavy camera gear, but Kev was so supportive. We chatted, rested, set little targets before resting some more and with constant words of encouragement I made it to the top – and, boy, was it worth it. Kevin is so knowledgeable about the local area and knew exactly where to go to get the best shots his knowledge of the hares, and their behavior pattern is exceptional. It was a joy to chat with him as he shared his knowledge and experiences, whilst we crawled around on the ground photographing the hares!! I think it’s fair to say that Kevin is a pretty laid-back sort of guy, so easy to get along with, and he has a real passion for wildlife. It was an absolutely fantastic two days. The terrain and the weather were both a challenge but it was so rewarding to share some of Kev’s passion for these amazing creatures.”
