Winter is a season of careful decisions for the mountain hare. Every movement uses precious energy, and remaining still is often the safest choice. Its white winter coat blends seamlessly with the snow, allowing it to disappear into the landscape while it waits, alert to the slightest sign of danger before deciding whether to move.
Photographing moments like this has taught me that Patience is equally important behind the camera. Shaped By The Mountains isn't about chasing wildlife, but about slowing down enough to become part of the landscape. The longer I spend in these quiet places, the more they reveal, and those fleeting encounters are often the most rewarding.

In this vast and unforgiving world, the mountain hare often stands alone, perfectly at home in a place where few other animals can endure.

As part of Shaped by the Mountains, it reflects the freedom and resilience that define life in the Highlands, where every movement has purpose. Fresh snow transforms the Highlands in a way that's difficult to put into words. The landscape becomes quieter, softer and more still, while the mountain hare becomes almost invisible against its winter surroundings. Perfectly adapted to these conditions, it can remain hidden in plain sight, relying on camouflage and stillness to survive another Highland winter.
Silence captures one of the defining ideas behind Shaped By The Mountains. It's not the dramatic weather or sweeping scenery that keeps drawing me back each winter, but these quiet moments where the mountain, the snow and the hare seem to exist as one. It's a reminder that some of the most memorable encounters happen not because the landscape is loud, but because it's silent.

Hidden beneath the snow, the mountain hare spends long periods resting, conserving precious energy against the cold. This quiet moment captures the instant it stirs from its slumber, stretching before returning to a landscape where every movement carries purpose. Winter offers little respite, and even after a period of rest, the challenges of finding food, avoiding predators, and enduring the elements are never far away.

Winter in the Scottish Highlands is relentless. Blizzards sweep across the mountains, temperatures plunge well below freezing, and the landscape offers little shelter from the elements. Yet the mountain hare remains, weathering conditions that few other animals could endure. Its thick winter coat, powerful hind legs and remarkable resilience allow it to survive where life seems almost impossible.
Enduring captures that quiet determination. Blanketed by snow as the storm rages around it, the hare simply waits, conserving energy until the worst has passed. As part of Shaped by the Mountains, this image is a reminder that these animals are not merely surviving the Highlands—they have been shaped by them. Their resilience is written into every winter they endure, and it is this extraordinary ability to persist against the odds that continues to inspire me each time I return to the mountains.
