    • How to use natural light, weather, and atmosphere creatively

    • Composition techniques for stronger storytelling and environmental imagery

    • Approaches for photographing behaviour, movement, and intimate portraits

    • How to adapt your photography to rapidly changing mountain conditions

    • Editing and post-processing guidance to enhance mood, depth, and narrative within your images

With an extremely limited group size of just three participants, the workshop is designed to provide a highly personal experience with plenty of one-to-one tuition and creative discussion throughout.

    Why Photograph the Carneddau Ponies?

The Carneddau ponies are one of Wales’ most enduring symbols of wildness and resilience. Living high within the mountains year-round, these semi-feral ponies have adapted to some of the harshest and most beautiful conditions in Britain. From heavy winter storms to golden summer evenings, their lives are shaped entirely by the landscape around them.

Photographing the Carneddau ponies is about far more than capturing beautiful wildlife images. It is about documenting a living piece of Welsh heritage and telling the story of an ancient herd that has roamed these mountains for generations.

Their weathered coats, powerful presence, and freedom within the vast mountain scenery create endless opportunities for evocative and emotional photography. Combined with the dramatic landscapes of the Carneddau, shifting weather systems, and constantly changing light, no two moments — or photographs — are ever the same.

  • “The pony workshop with Kevin was a rare and unique experience. Kevin knows the hills like the back of his hand. The session was informative, providing photographic guidance and technical support and rare encounters with the majestic animals gave me a fascinating insight into their behavior. We wandered across stunning scenery on an exciting and rewarding day capturing mystical silhouettes and intimate close-up shots of one inquisitive youngster. Kevin’s passion for the ponies is infectious and I have since viewed these beautiful animals with an entirely new lens!”

    — Cate - Spirit Of The Carneddau Workshop

  • "I had a wonderful time on a Carneddau pony workshop with Kevin, which, given the weather, was an amazing achievement! When I look at the photos I took, I can see a difference between those I took with Kevin’s guidance and what I would have taken on my own. I have more variety and they are technically better. I’m really chuffed to feel that I learned something and I loved the ponies and locations. As well as that, I enjoyed Kevin’s company and appreciated that he went ahead despite the weather conditions (prolonged pouring rain), that he was so good-natured about it all, and that he picked me up from the hotel! It was great to get expert and knowledgeable guidance from such a skilled, award-winning photographer. During the day, Kevin focussed on helping me (rather than taking his own photos) which I appreciated very much. I can highly recommend Kevin’s workshops ”

—Helen - Spirit Of The Carneddau Workshop

  • “A wonderful day with the beautiful wild ponies. I feel privileged to have been able to get so close to them and be in their territory. Kevin was good company and shared his extensive knowledge about the ponies. It is clear he has a great passion for them. Kevin was generous with his time with individuals giving encouragement and passing on his field craft techniques to help us set up for good shots. We didn’t get the sun but that didn’t dampen Kevin’s enthusiasm in attempting to get good photographs"

Kate - Spirit Of The Carneddau Workshop

  • “Had a really enjoyable day photographing the beautiful wild ponies with Kevin. His enthusiasm and knowledge knew no bounds and even though the sun didn’t make an appearance I managed to capture the ponies in their natural environment. A brilliant day🐴”

THE SPIRIT OF THE FELL

Set against the dramatic landscapes of the Lake District National Park, the Fell pony is one of Britain’s oldest and most iconic native mountain breeds. Renowned for their strength, intelligence, and calm nature, these remarkable ponies have played an important role within the upland communities of Northern England for centuries, becoming deeply connected to the cultural identity and heritage of the Lake District fells.

Bred to withstand the harsh conditions of the northern mountains, Fell ponies are perfectly adapted to life within this rugged environment. Their powerful build, flowing manes, and striking presence make them an extraordinary subject to photograph, particularly when framed against the dramatic landscapes, shifting weather, and atmospheric light of the fells.

This workshop is delivered in partnership with Fell Pony Heritage Trust, an organisation dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting the heritage of the Fell pony and the landscapes they inhabit. Through conservation grazing, education, and community-led initiatives, the trust plays an important role in ensuring these iconic ponies remain part of the Lake District’s living heritage for generations to come.

Photographing the Fell ponies is about far more than creating beautiful images. It is an opportunity to connect with the history, landscape, and conservation story surrounding one of Britain’s most treasured native breeds, while developing a deeper appreciation for the relationship between wildlife, heritage, and the natural environment.
