THE WILD HEART OF THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS

Winter Wildlife Photography Experience.

Spend immersive days in the Cairngorms photographing Mountain Hares, Red Deer and the dramatic winter landscapes of the Scottish Highlands while developing a more atmospheric and storytelling-led approach to wildlife photography.

The Cairngorms in winter are truly wild ancient pine forests, snow-covered mountains and shifting weather systems creating one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Britain. Every winter I return in search of fleeting light, intimate wildlife encounters and moments that capture the raw beauty of the Highlands.

This experience is about far more than simply photographing wildlife. It’s about slowing down, observing behaviour and learning how to create images with atmosphere, emotion and meaning. Throughout the workshop, I’ll share the creative approaches and fieldcraft techniques I use within my own photography, helping you build stronger compositions and develop a more personal photographic style.

With small group sizes and extensive time in the field, this is designed to be a highly immersive and personal photographic experience in one of Britain’s last truly wild winter landscapes.

  • There are many places to photograph puffins, but few can match the experience of Fair Isle. As Britain's most remote inhabited island, Fair Isle offers a rare combination of extraordinary wildlife, breathtaking scenery and a sense of wildness that is becoming increasingly difficult to find elsewhere. Reaching the island feels like stepping into another world—one shaped by dramatic seas, rugged coastlines and a way of life that has remained closely connected to nature for generations.

During the breeding season, thousands of seabirds gather around the island's cliffs and headlands, creating one of the most spectacular wildlife experiences in the UK. Puffins are undoubtedly the stars of the show, nesting amongst flower-covered cliff tops and returning daily with beaks full of sand eels. Their character, behaviour and accessibility provide endless photographic opportunities, from intimate portraits and behavioural interactions to wider environmental images that place them within the landscape.

What makes Fair Isle particularly special is the variety it offers. Beyond the puffins, you'll find guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, kittiwakes and skuas, while the island's dramatic cliffs, historic lighthouses, wild seas and ever-changing weather provide an inspiring backdrop for landscape and wildlife photography alike. Every day brings different conditions, different light and new creative possibilities.

The long northern summer evenings are another of Fair Isle's great rewards. Soft, directional light often lingers late into the day, creating ideal conditions for photography and allowing us to spend more time in the field when wildlife activity is at its peak. Combined with the island's remote location and relatively low visitor numbers, this creates a far more immersive and rewarding experience than many of the UK's more heavily visited seabird colonies.

For photographers, Fair Isle is far more than a destination to photograph puffins. It's a place to slow down, observe, connect with nature and develop a deeper appreciation for the wildlife and landscapes around you. It is this unique combination of wildlife, scenery, solitude and photographic opportunity that keeps drawing me back year after year—and why I believe it remains one of the finest wildlife photography destinations in Britain.

  • “The Best!!! Kevin was attentive, caring and would make sure each one of us was ok. He gave each one individual photographic help and tuition and made sure we all had a turn in the best position for a shot. He didn't take his camera out until the fifth day although he brought his bag with him every day. We would definitely like to travel with him again"

  • “ I booked this trip versus other similar trips as I’d been with Kevin before and knew of his passion for Puffins and The Shetlands from his book. It was also a part of the world I wanted to explore with someone who knew the lay of the land. The trip exceeded my expectations at every level in terms of the locations and the photo opportunities. I have managed to get some (for me) awesome shots under Kevin’s guidance. Kevin’s winning personality also made the trip a huge success in terms of how we all got on together. Just tops.”
